About NeuroHope

Continued Rehabilitation and Wellness Following Neurologic Injury

Founded as a non-profit in 2013 by recovered quadriplegic Chris Leeuw, NeuroHope began treating its first patients two years later, in February of 2015, on a therapy mat in a small room at the University of Indianapolis Krannert School of Physical Therapy.

In the years since, through grassroots fundraising, expansion support from Indiana CTSI (through the Department of Health), the OrthoIndy Foundation, and generous support from the community, NeuroHope has grown to a 13,000 square foot facility, launched a multi-disciplinary team, and has helped hundreds of families on the the road to recovery.

We are a proud member of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network (NRN), a network of rehabilitation centers designed to promote functional recovery AND improve the health and quality of life for people living with paralysis.

Why NeuroHope?

There is no preparation for life-changing injury. The recovery process is a mental, emotional, and physical whirlwind. As patients move to a rehabilitation hospital to begin daily therapy, they are often discharged in a matter of weeks – a time when therapy is most needed.

Recovery Is Slow:

Even the most incomplete spinal cord injuries take months or years of aggressive rehabilitation to maximize recovery and neuroplasticity (the nervous system’s attempt to re-wire after injury).

Insurance Does Not Provide A Continuum Of Care:

Unfortunately, the injured are often discharged from rehabilitation hospitals only a few weeks after injury, at a time when aggressive, specialized therapy is most needed.

Outpatient Visits Are Few And Far Between:

After hospital discharge, most insurance plans limit access to 30 or fewer outpatient therapy visits per year to continue recovery. For patients recovering from neurologic injuries, this is grossly insufficient.

The Cost Of Care Is Too High:

Due to the very high cost of physical therapy at most traditional healthcare facilities (often $300-$400 per hour), self-pay rates after insurance visits are exhausted are not affordable, which restricts the long-term access patients need.

The NeuroHope Model is Different

As a non-profit, we uniquely offer affordable self-pay rates after insurance visits are exhausted, so people recovering from neurologic injuries can have access to resources they need to maximize recovery and maintain a healthy quality of life.

Our Mission Extends Beyond Traditional Rehabilitation

Exercise is important to everyone, especially those living with paralysis.  NeuroHope provides an affordable next step in the recovery process. We offer extended care programs separate from physical and occupational therapy, including: specialized personal training sessions, individualized workout plans, open gym and supervised fitness center access, and daily group cardio, strengthening, and stretching classes.

Our programs focus on getting clients out of their wheelchairs, performing functional activities, and strengthening muscular and cardiovascular health. This type of adaptive exercise can reduce hospital re-admission rates and lower health care costs for people with physical disabilities, which benefits hospitals, insurers, patients and caregivers.
