Join us February 13th! Wheelchair skills training !
This is the 2nd year we are proud to host @iuskillsonwheels for a FREE training program designed to help adults with spinal cord injuries navigate life situations confidently in their manual wheelchairs. NeuroHope and @iuoccupationaltherapy students collaborate to focus on teaching essential wheelchair skills. Starting with foundational skills for new manual wheelchair users, to advanced techniques such as navigating curbs, ramps, stairs, and uneven terrains.

An exciting year of expansion comes to a close, and we have much to be thankful for at NeuroHope!

We celebrated our 10-year anniversary with major funding from the @orthoindy Foundation and the Indiana Department of Health, continued a research project with @uindy_kspt to track the hospital re-admission rates of our patients, strengthened programs to serve more than 200 people along their road to recovery (the most ever in a given year), and helped the 600th patient in our history!

Additionally, we proudly partnered with @conquerparalysisnow , a fellow non-profit founded by @sam.schmidt_ , and relocated our clinical operations in September to the newly renovated DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center.

In addition to expanding NeuroHope’s services and increasing access to rehabilitative care, the DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center will be a future campus for research, adaptive sports and recreation, and like-minded organizations to collaborate and reside.

Over the last decade, NeuroHope has become a critical community resource for people recovering from paralysis.

Our mission to ensure those living with paralysis have long-term access to rehabilitation and wellness continues!

Tomorrow is GIVING TUESDAY – the largest fundraising day of the year!

In the meantime, the last program highlight in our three day series is our monthly wellness and adaptive fitness programs.

NeuroHope provides an affordable “next step” in care for people recovering from paralysis.

Skilled therapy (PT, OT, SLP), and personal training (guided exercise) are the core programs we provide, but we also recognize that recovery is about more than “therapy”. Our monthly wellness program, called the “Path to Independence” (PTI) program, is an important part of our model of care, with more than 55 of our 150 active patients enrolled!

The PTI program is led by Wellness Coordinator Mel Spencer. Mel earned her Master’s degree in Exercise Science and uses her knowledge to develop exercise plans for clients for open and supervised gym access at our adaptive fitness center. With assistance from our amazing therapy techs Caroline Kavanaugh, Joseph Zacek, and Kate Partlow, Mel also leads daily group cardio and adaptive strength training classes.

Our wellness program has grown to feature much more than physical fitness.

The caregiver support group “Warrior Wednesdays” led by Mary Meredith and the community group “First Friday with Friends” led by PTA Lydia Miner and patient Jenny Rosebrock both meet every month, and we look forward to adding nutrition and mental health programs in the coming year!

Together, we have created a community that has evolved into a critical resource for the spinal cord injury, brain injury, and stroke community in central Indiana.

Each day until then, we’re highlighting the three programs at NeuroHope (Skilled Therapy, Guided Exercise, Monthly Wellness) that make our comprehensive program so unique.

Today’s spotlight: GUIDED ADAPTIVE EXERCISE:

It takes months, sometimes years to recover from neurologic injury - much more time than insurance-based therapy allows. NeuroHope understands that recovery goes beyond therapy. Our unique model of care features a Guided Exercise (GE) team of kinesiologists and personal trainers that work with our physical and occupational therapists to provide patients a critical “next step” in care.

The GE Team is led by lead trainer Steven Bowser (MS), Neuro Exercise Specialists Hamilton Spidle, Tia Kempson, and Cole Cooper and Exercise Specialist Caitlin Gaich.

NeuroHope is special because of our comprehensive model that ensures affordable, longer-term access to therapy and fitness programs are available for people living with paralysis.

We have helped more than 600 people on their road to recovery - thanks to supporters LIKE YOU!!

On Tuesday morning, we’ll ask for YOUR HELP to smash our $5,000 goal for the day as we make a final, year end push to reach our $150,000 relocation goal (we’re only $25,000 away!) - so don’t miss it!

Each day until then, we’re highlighting the three programs at NeuroHope (Skilled Therapy, Guided Exercise, Monthly Wellness) that make our comprehensive program so unique.

Patients recovering from #neurologic injury are discharged from the hospital in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, their long rehabilitative journey has just begun.

Extended care programs at NeuroHope begin with Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy that guide treatment plans and tailor care to maximize neurologic recovery for patients when they leave the hospital.

Our therapy team is led by Clinical Director Elliot Cohee (PT, DPT, NCS), physical therapists Brittanie Helgeson, Ali Peters, and Will Roark. PTAs Lydia Miner and Marshall Sparenberg, occupational therapists Elizabeth Parr and Krista Kaufman and speech-language pathologist Lauren Collins.

Our amazing therapy team works with our Guided Exercise team (kinesiologists) to ensure a high standard of specialized care continues following their clinical discharge.

In August, 15 year-old Evan sustained a paralyzing spinal cord injury due to complications from a surgery.
His recovery is ONGOING! Here, Elizabeth (OT) and @iuoccupationaltherapy student Sally, use a unique form of Trancutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TSS) to work on core strength, balance and functional recovery. Unlike traditional electrical stimulation that places electrodes on and stimulates the muscles, TSS places electrodes directly on the spine, and on the abdomen to stimulate the central nervous system system.
With the stimulation turned on Evan reports increased control in his steps and movements, and carry over after the stimulation is off..

His Goal: navigating the halls at school easier, and getting back to the golf course.

Aquatics training with our friends and mentors from @neuroworx ! Such a valuable day for our entire team in the classroom and in the pools, as we are now proud to offer pool therapy for outpatient #physicaltherapy / #occupationaltherapy and #adaptivefitness.

Aquatic therapy after neurologic injury uses water resistance and buoyancy to improve strength, balance, and endurance, while unloading the body from the strain of gravity. The @hydroworx pools are equipped with full surface underwater treadmills, cameras to assess movement and gait, and therapy jets to provide resistance.

Many thanks to Jan and Matt from Neuroworx for visiting and spending the day with us!

Ten years ago, NeuroHope started with a single therapy mat @uindy @uindy_kspt . In the years since, thanks to Indiana CTSI, @orthoindy Foundation, @reevefoundation and many others , we grew to a 24-person multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, changed state legislation , raised millions of dollars , and most importantly helped more than 600 people in their journey battling #paralysis.

NOW, we are honored to begin our biggest partnership yet with @sam.schmidt_ and @conquerparalysisnow in the opening of the #DRIVEN #NeuroRecovery Center!

It’s all centered around on our singular and joint mission: Recovery from neurologic injury takes more time than traditional healthcare will allow. That doesn’t mean access to the resources patients need should be limited.

Our new partnership not only allows NeuroHope to continue our mission of affordable, extended care, but it also provides a campus to expand #adaptivesports, recreation and community support programs, research opportunities , and a haven for other like-minded organizations to potentially reside.

Thank you to the 400+ supporters, patients, and community partners of NeuroHope and CPN who celebrated our ribbon cutting with us!

This is a landmark moment for the community and we are eternally grateful for Sam Schmidt , and all of our supporters and staff through the years that have made this facility a reality.

Now the work continues to make this center the best in the Midwest!
